Robust rich and with multiple perspectives

The education discussions today are often volatile and passionate. It would be alarming if they were not. However, many educators seem to shy away from rich and robust discussions concerning pedagogy. There is not one way, the way, or, the best way to teach. We should all become 'REPERTOIRISTS', a creative and informed group of felixble professionals who utilise the knowledge from the rapidly growing bodies of research. This research we draw upon will come from many fields and so give us mutliple perspectives. Educators must ensure they don't become pedantically set into aligning with one body of research. As educators it is of vital importance to discuss, deconstruct and reflect upon the knowledge and evidence avalaible to us about how students learn, how they intellectual develop and how we are able to increase achievement. Deep discussions will then frame our understanding of how to educate a generation with needs that are constantly emerging, being discovered and constructed.

Without a doubt we are certainly entering an interesting era. All educators must reflect on the changing trends and needs in education. How can a student in this day and age be effectively educated and prepared for an unknown future? "To solve problems that don't exist now?" Even the word "educated" or to "educate" will start to take on a new meaning. What does it mean to be educated? What does it mean to educate? Surely the concept of the all knowing, font of knowledge teacher standing at the front of the classroom armed with chalk and duster should become a thing of the past.  There is no place for such a teacher in the world of web 2. How do we align teaching practice with the needs of the millennia child? A plan for strategic teacher professional development is the first step.

The real challenges these days for Principals are not how to keep on top of the organisation and event management of running schools but how to develop a rich, authentic professional learning cultures in our schools where honesty and reflection are seen as the way forward. How do Principals help teachers to unpack the mind sets that no longer serve them in trying to understand the new learners we have everyday in our classrooms. How do Principals help teachers to overcome their inhibitions into opening and trusting and learning professionally together. How do Principals make their schools reflections of their beliefs and values that they hold close to their hearts. The key to these questions is to always be the person we say we are, to always model the willingness to be reflective and honest. This is the real and ultimate leadership challenge and one where our schools are a reflection of the leadership within them. Coming through the storms is where we forge our own charachter as leaders and it is in this honesty that real professional learning begins.
